Syndicate reorganizes DU sexual harassment probe committee

The Dhaka University's committee to address complaints of sexual harassment has been reorganized on Tuesday (Sept 30) at a meeting of the DU Syndicate chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique.

The committee has been reorganized as per the directives of the High Court division of the Supreme Court, said a DU press release.

Prof Dr Nasrin Ahmad, pro-vice-chancellor (education) has been appointed convener of the committee while the members are assistant professor of the DU English Department Nilima Akhter, lecturer of the Marketing Department Afrin Chowdhury, Prof Mahfuza Khanam and Advocate Syed Rezaur Rahman.


Any student, affected by any sexual harassment and repression, can directly lodge their complaints to the convener of the committee, the press release mentioned.

Phone use may lead to brain cancer

The longer someone talks over the phone - in terms of hours and years - the more likely is he/she to develop glioma, a deadly form of brain cancer, says a new study.

Brain tumour rates were three times more among people, who spoke on cell or cordless phones after more than 25 years than those who did not use them, the findings showed. 

"The risk is three times higher after 25 years of use. We can see this clearly," Lennart Hardell, lead researcher and oncologist from University Hospital in Orebro in Sweden was quoted by Daily Mail as saying.

The researchers believe their findings also suggest people who eat lots of oil molecule fat are less likely to develop heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Dangerous health hazards for drinking arsenic water

The arsenic hazard in Bangladesh villagers now appeared as a ‘real disaster', affecting thousands physically, physiologically, mentally and economically.

It is intensifying malnutrition, poverty and destitution among the already poor villagers. The futures of the Bangladesh villages are jeopardized.

Arsenic contaminated underground water is one such severe problem which the government has failed to manage properly.

Female student held from slain RU teacher's house

Police have detained a female student of Rajshahi University (RU) from the house of slain teacher Prof AKM Shafiul Islam.

The woman was found inside the sociology department teacher’s locked house in Chouddapai area, adjacent to the university campus, on Saturday after he was murdered, said Rajshahi Police Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman. 


Police had kept mum about arrest though media broke the news. The 11 people shown arrested by law enforcers over the murder also did not include her name. But Rahman, who is going to be transferred from Rajshahi shortly, admitted arrest of the student on Tuesday.

Vote for Wasfia: Prof Yunus

Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus has urged all to vote for Bangladeshi mountaineer Wasfia Nazreen to win the National Geographic People's Choice Award.

Prof Yunus also congratulated Wasfia for becoming the first ever Bangladeshi to be selected as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. In a statement at the Yunus Centre, the Nobel laureate said: "You [Wasfia] have made us incredibly proud. 

"We want to see Wasfia and ‎Bangladesh win the People's Choice Adventurer of the Year too."  In a picture posted on the Facebook page of the Yunus Centre, Prof Yunus is seen holding a placard saying "I vote for Wasfia every day... Do you?." 

10 engineers leave Biman

Ten engineers have left Biman Bangladesh Airlines at a time as the authorities neither increased their salaries nor gave any promotion.

Due to the resignation of the engineers, who had Basic licenses, engineering and material management wing, Biman faced a huge loss as they used to work swiftly if any jet faced problems, said concerned officials.

They also used to work for the maintenance of 777-300 ER Boeing of Biman, sources said. Reliable sources said that the engineers have joined Qatar Airways and it will pay them 10 times more than Biman.

Highway blocked over schoolboy's death

A schoolboy has been killed after a bus ran him over in Chandradighalia area on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gopalganj.

Angry locals blocked the highway for about 30 minutes protesting the road accident on Wednesday morning.  Deceased Mifta Shikdar, 10, son of Moazzem Shikdar, was a class III student of Chandradighalia Primary School. 

SSC, equivalent exams to begin Feb 2

The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and its equivalent examinations of 2015 will begin on February 2.

The examinations will begin simultaneously under the country’s 10 education boards, including one of madrasah and another technical board.

The education ministry has published the examination schedule on its website.

Bangladesh at high risk of terrorism!

Bangladesh is at a risk of higher level of terrorism in spite of not having any conflict in the country, said a report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

IEP has published the report titled Global Terrorism Index 2014 using four indicators to create a weighted five-year average for each country. 

According to the report, Bangladesh ranked 23rd position with a score of 5.25 among 124 countries in the global terrorism index. 

Iraq has topped the list with a score 10, followed by Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Around 6,362 died in 2,492 terror attacks in Iraq last year. 

The international research body said the pattern of terrorism acts in the South Asian regions mostly includes explosions.

Myanmar national arrested over Burdwan blast

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India has arrested a Myanmar national from Hyderabad in connection with the Burdwan blast case.

According to several Indian media, arrestee Khalid Mohammed, 21, was living in the Telangana capital with fake identity documents. 

Quoting NIA sources, Zee News reported that Khalid has links with Tahreek-e-Taliban and is an IED expert.  "He is also said to be involved in running terror camps in bordering areas of Bangladesh and Myanmar," the report claimed. 

It stated that Jihadi literature related to ISIS was also recovered from the arrestee.  Khalid's arrests comes at a time when an NIA team is in Bangladesh to probe the terror trail linked with the blast in Burdwan district of West Bengal. 

On Monday, the home ministry of Bangladesh formed a high-power committee to liaise with the visiting delegation of NIA in light of allegations that Bangladeshi nationals were involved in the Burdwan explosion last month. 

The Indian agency is investigating jihadist networks following a bomb blast on October 2 at a house in Bardhaman town in India’s West Bengal state.

Fakhrul terms Ershad ‘neo-freedom fighter’

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday termed Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad a ‘neo-freedom fighter’ for commenting on party founder Ziaur Rahman.

“Ershad has emerged as a new freedom fighter. We don’t have any interest in talking about him. It seems he gets importance when we speak about him,” said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. 

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while addressing a discussion at the Institution of Engineers in the capital city. 

Bangladesh whitewash Zimbabwe

Bangladesh has whitewashed Zimbabwe by defeating the visitors by 186 runs in the third Test match of the series in Chittagong.

Zimbabwe scored 374 and 262 while Bangladesh 502 and 319 in the match. 

The final wicket fell in the 85th over when Natsai M'shangwe was trapped lbw by Shafiul Islam. Craig Ervine, Richmond Mutumbami and Tinashe Panyangara also fell the same way while Shingi Masakadza had his off stump pegged back.

2kg gold seized at Dhaka airport

Customs officials recovered 20 gold bars, weighing two kilograms, from the possession of a passenger from Malaysia at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today.

The passenger was identified as Hashim Mollah, 35, of Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar.

Hashim arrived Dhaka from Kuala Lumpur by an aircraft of Bangladesh Biman Airlines at about 6:30am, said Assistant Commissioner (Customs) Abu Yusuf.

HT Imam's comments irk Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday came down hard on her Political Affairs Adviser HT Imam for his comments on BCS exams and role of the administration in the January 5 national elections.

Hasina castigated the adviser at a meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Board held at the PM's official residence -- Gono Bhaban.

The ALPB members too reprimanded Imam for his comments, meeting sources told The Daily Star, preferring anonymity.

Students block Dhaka-Rajshahi highway

Students of sociology department of Rajshahi University (RU) blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway protesting against the killing of professor AKM Shafiul Islam Lilon on Saturday.

Earlier, miscreants stabbed professor Shafiul of Sociology department of the university to death in the afternoon.

Enraged by the incident, students put barricade on the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway in front of the university and staged demonstration at around 6:15pm, demanding arrest of the killers and their exemplary punishment.

Facebook launches user-friendly privacy policy

The social networking site has rolled out a clearer, user-friendly privacy policy — down to 2,700 words from more than 9,000 earlier. 

With this, Facebook has also launched a feature called Privacy Basics — an animated guide to control what others see about you, how others can interact with you and what you see.

"Our goal is to make the information about Facebook as clear as possible. Our hope is that it will not take long for people to read through this and really get it,"

Hartal in Sylhet demanding acquittal of Mayor

Amra Sylhetbasi, a local social organisation, on Saturday called a daylong hartal in the district for Monday protesting against the inclusion of Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in the supplementary charge-sheet in the Shah AMS Kibria murder case.  

Amra Sylhetbasi president Abdur Razzak announced the shutdown from a mass rally held at the Court Point in the city in the afternoon. He said they will observe the strike from 6:00am to 6:00pm.

After the rally, a procession was brought out in support of the hartal. 

If I am arrested, you can’t stay in power

Krishak Sramik Janata league president Kader Siddique said prime minister Sheikh Hasina cannot cling to power even for a month, if he is arrested. He further said if she dares arrest him, he would wear bangles. 

Kader Siddique said this at the protest rally marking 15th 'Vote rigging day' on the Kachua Public School field in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail on Saturday. Massive rigging was alleged during Tangail-8 by-polls in 1999.

Qazi jailed for registering child marriage

A qazi (marriage registrar) was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for registering marriage of a child in Ghoshpara village of Nandail upazila in Mymensingh on Friday.

The jailed was Nizamuddin, a local marriage registrar. Being tipped off about a secret child marriage in the village, a police team along with local UNO Ohidul Islam, conducted a drive in the village and held the qazi.

Later, a mobile court led by the UNO handed down the verdict.

BNP is a party of razakars: Joy

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina's son, also her IT adviser, Sajeeb Wazed Joy on Friday accused BNP as a party of razakars.

Joy made this remark while speaking at a seminar, titled 'Liberation war, democracy, development and good governance', organised by Shuchinta Foundation at a hotel in the capital.

Joy said BNP should break their alliance with 'rajakars' to prove they themselves are not razakars.


He also accused Ziaur Rahman of bringing back the razakars in the independent Bangladesh.

PM Sheikh Hasina angry over Bangladesh Chhatra League!

Angry at the infighting in Chittagong University (CU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling party’s student wing, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked two leaders of her party to resolve it.

Hasina, also the president of Awami League, talked to party’s Chittagong City committee President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin over the matter during a banquet at Chittagong Cantonment on Wednesday.

A broken heart kills your physical fitness

Believe it or not, losing a loved one can cause someone to die from a broken heart. According to a study by University of Birmingham, UK, extreme emotions like grief, pain and sense of loss can cause fatal damage to your immune system, thus endangering your life. 

Scientists studied the effects of bereavement on blood cells called neutrophils, which help in combating bacterial infections such as pneumonia etc. They took blood samples from recently-bereaved people and looked at how good their neutrophils were at killing bugs.
