The Jamaat-e-Islami has called a strike for
Wednesday after the Supreme Court upheld the death verdict for its Assistant
Secretary General Mohammad Kamaruzzaman.
The latest strike announced on Monday,
means the country will be under a 48-hour shutdown starting from 6am Wednesday
until 6am Friday.
Jamaat has meanwhile reduced its Monday’s 24-hour strike by 12 hours in view of
‘Ashura’. The strike will now end at 6pm Monday instead of 6am Tuesday.
There is a public holiday for observing ‘Ashura’ on Tuesday.
Earlier, the party called a 24-hour strike for Thursday after Jamaat’s
Executive Council member Mir Quasem Ali was sentenced to death for 1971 war
crimes on Sunday.
Last week, Ameer-e-Jamaat Motiur Rahman Nizami, who headed the vigilante
militia Al-Badr in 1971, was sentenced to death by hanging on Wednesday. The
party called shutdowns for Thursday, Sunday and Monday in protest against the
verdict.
